How To Paint a Room (DIY Step-by-Step)

Nicely painted wall plays an important role for a room decoration.

As plain colour wall might start to be out dated and bores you,

You might consider adding some pattern to it.

Hiring a painter for a pattern painted wall will cost you fortune.

After seeing the quotation....

You might be tempted to do it yourself instead.

Painting the wall by your own or DIY though hard, it is doable.

But,

Before you proceed brushing the wall off, as an amateur, it is important to do some research and learn theoretically on how to paint a wall.

It is also advised for you to go through some DIY wall painting idea before making decision on choosing the best pattern to the wall.

There are lots of pattern design for you wall from as simple as hand painting to the one that need to use stencils.

Remember....

Once you jot the brush onto the wall, there is no turning back.

How to Paint a Wall

Before adding any pattern,

It is important to have a solid base on the wall.

Remember,

Your aim is to have good finishing therefor it is important to prep your wall before starting any job.

 

Step 1

It is important to make sure wall surface are smooth to have a smooth finishing.

Examine and remove any flaking paints, bump and holes on the wall surface.

Use a scrapper to lightly scrap off any flaking paint and bumps then continue with sanding and sealing process.

Smoothing the wall is important.

Skipping this process might cause the old paint to lose during coating later which will cost more time and effort to adjust it.

For cracks and holes,

You may first apply the filler then let it dry before the sanding and sealing process.

Greasy surface will trap dust therefore it is also a big no to skip the cleaning.

You may create your own solution to clean the greasy wall by mixing one portion of dish washing soap with four portion of warm water.

By using microfiber cloth,

Apply this solution to the wall and dry it with clean cloth afterwards.

Use sandpaper to rub the wall if your previous paint is gloss or satin.

This to ensure your next paint will stick nicely.

Rub the paper gently in circular motion until it creates a layer and rinse is with clean water.

Let it dry and your wall is ready to go.

 

Step 2

As your wall is now ready,

It is time to prepare your work area.

Spread newspaper or clothes down the floor on your working area to cover any spreads or spill while painting.

You may arrange all your paints, brushes, towels and tape in an easily reach area so you won’t need much move during work.

To avoid any hassle, investing on high quality roller is a good decision.

It is useless to have high quality paint if it is not come with a good roller. 

High quality roller will give you better coverage and re-painting is avoidable hence it will save some of your time and energy.

 

Step 3

This is the step where you need to cover everything.

First and foremost, use masking tape to cover all the switches, sockets and skirting boards to avoid any splatter that could ruin the look.

If your ceiling and wall are going to be paint in different colour,

Apply masking tape along the wall edges so that your ceiling won’t get the touch too when painting the wall.

Other than things on the wall,

You might want to consider covering yourself too.

If you don’t have any old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, you may put on painter smock.

Though most acrylic paint is non-toxic, In case of a very sensitive skin, you can always get a latex or vinyl hand gloves to cover your hand.

Step 4

Now is the time for the painting to begin.

Before you add any colour, do not forget to apply a layer of primer especially when:

1. Paint over a darker colour

2. There is an issue on the wall such as old surface, wood, concrete, glossy paint.

 

It is recommended to use grey colour primer as it will be easier to cover with coloured paint.

The only reason you may skip applying primer and use paint & primer in one mixes paint is when you have a very good, smooth and non-glossy.

If not....

Then do not take a risk.

After you are done with the primer,

You are now prepared with the colouring process.

Before buying... 

Ask your salesperson to advice you the estimation amount of paint needed to cover your area and you buy it all at once.

Then, instead of using one tin at a time,

You may box your paint by mixing it all thoroughly in one big bucket. 

Boxing your paint will keep the paint colour consistent.

As an amateur,

Some of you might have never touched a roller before.

Therefore,

To make you comfortable and learn the feel, you may practice using it first on a piece of cardboard.

You may slowly learn the technique and once you are ready, you can move onto the wall.

One of the rolling techniques you may use is to roll it in M or W motion.

As for the edges and corners,

Avoid using roller but replace it with small brush instead.

Always start your painting from top to bottom and not otherwise.

As you are painting, you may have some spatters.

Therefore,

If you start from bottom, and the spatters happened when you are painting the top, you may need to repaint the bottom which will leave colour marks to the wall.

Once the first coat has dried, you may apply another layer of coat.

Two coats are recommended however it is depending on the guidance of your paint brand.

If you want to add pattern on the wall, here are some DIY wall painting ideas that might give you an inspiration:

a. Using tape

-  Apply tape to your wall in various geometric shapes.

-  Paint each shape. You may choose to use only one colour or apply different colour in different shapes.

-  Let it dry

-  Once the wall has completely dry, you may remove all the tapes and witness your wall turn into amazing pattern.

b. Using stencil

-  Using stencil to add pattern to your wall might not be as easy as using tape. It would take more time too but it suitable if you love more complex pattern to fill in the space

-  First, position your stencil anywhere on the wall as you planned. If you wish to cover the entire wall with it, you might want to position the stencil from top left or right in the middle.

-  Always use a level tool when positioning your stencil to make sure it will be in straight line.

-  You may outline the edge of the wall with some tapes if you want to.

-  Next, to attach the stencil to the wall, use repositionable spray adhesive until it become sticky then press it gently against the wall.

-  As now is time to apply the paint, do not press to hard when rolling as it will squish the paint and cause a spot. Use medium pressure and gently roll the roller.

-  Remember; do not forget to tap the excess paint off after dipping for reloading.

-  If you wish to apply multiple colours, you may coat it as many time you need but ensure to let one colour dry first before applying another colour.

-  Once you are done and the colour has dried, you may remove the stencil and do the touch up if necessary.

c. Ombre Paint Colour

-  First, you need to measure the wall and decide at which point you want the colour to be mixed. Divide the wall into sections depending on how many shades of colours you wish to apply. Mark the division line where the colour will be blended later.

-  Paint each colour on each section until it reaches the division line. At this division line, it is not necessary to ensure the paint are in straight line as it will be mixed later on the next step.

-  Recoating the wall if necessary

-  Next step is to blend the colours which play an important part. In this step, you might need to use three different brushes. One for each colour and another one will be used to blend the colour with water.>

-  At the division line, paint both colour with respective brushes. This will need to be done quickly as we need to the next step before the paint dry.>

-  Next, by using the third brush, dip it into the water, tap it to avoid dripping and start to blend the colour on the wall by brushing up and down or left and right depending on the design. This is to give fading effect on the colour at the division line.>

-  Continue blending until you are satisfied with the fading effect.>

-  Let the paint dry. Remove the tape and you are now can enjoy your new view.
